Preconception Health: STIs and Pregnancy

STIs and Pregnancy 2

This was a presentation I did for the last Preconception Health training at Tulane. I'm kind of proud of it. It covers seven different STIs and their effect on pregnancy. Warning: there are some graphic pictures of infections.
The overall message is:

Get tested before you get pregnant.

Get tested early in pregnancy.

If you are pregnant - you have had unprotected sex!

Enjoy and feel free to use this slide show on your own.

Medical Ethics Fail

Read the full story at the Chicago Tribune.

Text reads:

If you voted for Obama...
Seek Urologic Care
Elsewhere.

Changes to Your Healthcare
Begin Right Now.
Not in Four Years.

I'm embarrassed to say this story came out of Mt. Dora, an otherwise lovely Central Florida town where my grandmother lives. Read the full story for the details. What bothers me most is Dr. Jack Cassell's insistence that this sign does not contradict his obligation to treat people. Apparently, political affiliation is not protected under anti-discrimination laws so he doesn't feel he has any obligation to treat people whose politics he disagrees with.

He seems to believe it is his right to choose his patients, and to choose only those who are aligned with his worldview.

I believe that's messed up.

Reliability vs. Validity

Because I can never keep them straight in my own mind...

Romania: Braşov

Romania: Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie, Iaşi

During our time in Iaşi, we toured the medical school where our Romanian friends attend classes. We also visited the anatomy museum, with preserved specimens. That was my favorite part.

Dr. Tzaicu performed surgery on himself, without anesthesia, in order to teach others.
