Medical Ethics Fail

Read the full story at the Chicago Tribune.

Text reads:

If you voted for Obama...
Seek Urologic Care

Changes to Your Healthcare
Begin Right Now.
Not in Four Years.

I'm embarrassed to say this story came out of Mt. Dora, an otherwise lovely Central Florida town where my grandmother lives. Read the full story for the details. What bothers me most is Dr. Jack Cassell's insistence that this sign does not contradict his obligation to treat people. Apparently, political affiliation is not protected under anti-discrimination laws so he doesn't feel he has any obligation to treat people whose politics he disagrees with.

He seems to believe it is his right to choose his patients, and to choose only those who are aligned with his worldview.

I believe that's messed up.

And I really liked the response to this issue from this doctor's blog:

"Caring for people equally, regardless of our personal thoughts about them, is what we do.

And if you don't think you can live up to that, then maybe you should find another profession. "
